There are a lot of myths about hypnosis... and here they are... debunked!
I won’t be able to get out of hypnosis. I will always be in a daze.
Hypnosis is a natural state of mind. In fact, we all go in and out of hypnosis / trance throughout the day. When you are daydreaming, you are in hypnosis. When you are at a concert and engulfed in the music, you are in hypnosis. When you drive and then end up at your destination realizing you weren’t consciously making the turns, you are in hypnosis. When you make art or perform, you are in hypnosis. When you are enjoying a good kiss, you are in hypnosis. When you are transitioning into falling asleep, you are in hypnosis.
I will lose control of my mind. I will be under the control of the Hypnotist.
Hypnosis does not make you lose control of your mind. A Hypnotist cannot make you do things or say things that you don’t want to do or say (more details on this in my last debunk). In fact, hypnotherapy gives you MORE control over your thoughts. That is why it is such a healthy and effective approach to healing!
I am supposed to fall asleep in session.
Hypnotherapy does not make you fall asleep. If you do fall asleep, it likely means you are very tired! Even those who enter a very deep trance are not asleep. Many hypnotherapy sessions require questions and talking. If you fall asleep, the Hypnotherapist will likely bring you back to awareness by snapping their fingers.
I forget everything that happens in the session.
This aligns with the idea that you are not asleep when in session. It is extremely rare to forget what you talked about once you become fully alert after a session. It is important to remember what happened so you can use the lessons to heal.
The Hypnotherapist waves a magic wand and all my problems are fixed.
Hypnotists are not magicians! While you make great strides in each session, it is important to do the at-home accelerators that your Hypnotherapist has assigned. The lessons you’ve learned and journeys you’ve experienced in session open up a new version of you, but in order to fully work through your challenges, it is important to continue to train your mind for at least 21 consecutive days - so you can reverse the negative thoughts that have been hindering your growth.
Hypnotherapy requires no at-home work.

Hypnosis will unleash things I’m not ready to deal with.
While the subconscious mind stores certain memories that you are not consciously aware of, your mind will not unleash memories that you are not ready to work through. Your mind repressed those memories for a reason, so if you aren’t ready, they will not resurface. But the truth is - if you are coming to session, you most likely have made the conscious decision that you ARE ready to see what unfolds.
Hypnosis can create false memories.
If you have false memories, or mix two memories together as one, you’ve already done this on your own time. Hypnosis will not implant memories that don’t exist in your subconscious mind already.
Memory is a mixture of fact and perception. The "There are two sides to every story” phrase is no joke! Most of the time, no one is lying in a “two sides to every story" scenario. Both parties fully believe that their “story” is exactly what happened. Our minds categorize and compartmentalize how we interpret information - which is different than everyone else, in one way or another.
I have to try really hard to be hypnotized.
No! In fact, the harder you try, the less successful you will be. While hypnosis takes focus and desire, using will-power is counteractive in the process.
I can’t be hypnotized.
See the first debunk at the top of the page. You can be hypnotized because it is a natural state of mind. That said, some people are resistant to the therapy itself. If you have expectations that hypnosis won’t work for you, then you likely won’t be able to relax and unleash. While you do go in and out of trance on a daily basis, guided hypnosis may not be for you if you are unwilling to receive it. But like anything - practice brings great strides.
The Hypnotherapist can make me do things I don’t want to do.
NO. I’m just going to start this with a big capitalized “NO”. Absolutely not. Unfortunately for Hypnotherapists - movies and stage performances make hypnosis look bad. Movies like “Get Out” and “Donnie Darko” (both excellent films, by the way) do not accurately convey what hypnosis is.
Stage performances also do not convey what hypnosis is. You literally CANNOT cluck like a chicken if you don’t want to. People in hypnosis have a relaxed state of mind. Therefore, you may be WILLING to cluck like a chicken on stage (when you normally wouldn’t want to) - but, you are clucking because you aren’t analyzing your every move, meaning - the feelings of embarrassment, stage-fright or anxiety are absent because the analytical mind is quieted when hypnotized. Either way, clucking like a chicken is a choice. Again - we aren’t magicians! And even if we were, we still couldn’t make you.
